I just got back from a trip where I wanted to shoot log footage on my iPhone 17 Pro. I tried the black magic camera app, but after it crashed a number of times while recording clips, I switched to Final Cut Camera, which proved to be more reliable, for the most part. I had a few annoyances with the app and one giant bug/flaw. Things that I liked: I really preferred the interface of Final Cut camera to black magic camera. It is more thoughtfully designed and feels more like a native app. It offers easier camera switching and has a great zoom rocker. The little things that bugged me were that the app kept forgetting my preference for the time code to be set for ‘record run’ as opposed to ‘time of day’ (I have no idea why you would want this). Second, it was always a little difficult to manually adjust exposure and lock focus. I had the phone mounted to my vehicles dash and was recording clips of where I was driving and often when I faced the sun, it would go wildly out of focus (focusing on the pits of my windshield)—there needs to be an option to lock focus when a recording starts. Third, I would really like them to adopt iOS features like being able to put an icon to launch the app on your lock screen, or launch the app with the action button or camera control. For this trip, I needed to access the app quickly so I created a shortcut to launch the app with the action button, but you have to hold it down and then wait for your face to unlock the phone, so it wasn’t ideal. For an Apple developed app I’m really surprised they didn’t adopt these features. The biggest issue I had with Final Cut Camera was that at a certain point it forgot my log setting, and because I had the lot preview enabled I didn’t realize it wasn’t enabled anymore. Now I have a full days worth of clips that were shot in HDR (HLG) profile, which will make blending them with the other clips. I shot in Log 2 difficult. I really hope Apple irons out these issues because I really like the app otherwise. The quality of the video coming out of this iPhone is outstanding when using this app! Update: there hasn’t been any updates to fix these issues. I had turned the log preview off because of the aforementioned issue I had where the app forgot the log setting on me. Well, because of this I just shot several days of footage where the white balance was set to 3500k, and I couldn’t see it because the log preview was off. Awesome. I also had the log setting turn off on me again. I also ran into several instances of the app just seizing up and causing me to miss the moment. Demoting to two stars. Apple please fix this app!

Paid for the subscription for Final Cut iPad on my iPad and Final Cut camera for my iPhone and they do not work together and I’m getting a notification that says the two versions are different and no connection can be made. Final Cut camera is 2.0 and Final Cut iPad is 2.3 and I can’t update anything and can’t use it and you just stole my money please make this work.

I like the app. It just needs an update so we can control the app and see ourselves when recording a video.

Now I love this app it’s great for filming high quality video on my 15 Pro but I’ve encountered a problem where the app doesn’t record the first few seconds of my video I’ve recorded things and when I go to watch back the footage the first few seconds of the video are cut off this needs immediate attention
  • When it lets me shoot, the footage looks great!

I have been trying to shoot onto an external SSD using the lightning port on on my iPhone 17 Pro Max. The drive is fast enough and formatted ExFAT, the cable is correct, but it crashes all the time. That's not very cool. Currently, I am struggling with a way to keep the app from resetting its clip number to "0001" every time I offload my files from the phone. I'm hoping there is a good solution for this, but I haven't found it yet.
