  • A necessary app

With Apple Music as a platform, this app makes perfect sense for those new to classical music. Now, let’s do Rock & Roll.
  • Works Fairly Well

I am pursuing a degree in Piano Performance, so this app is invaluable, but as I complete a lot of school work on my Mac, it would be great if this app was available for Mac, too.
  • Completely flunks serious audiophile standards

By Why So Many Bad Apps?
Apple classical was designed by high school students employed on a part-time basis by Apple. And the high school kids only use iPhones and Apple classical was designed by them and for them. Audiophiles and serious classical music lovers listen to their music through their home audio system. That requires a hardwired connection from a desktop Mac, or a PC, or Apple TV. After three years, Apple has completely failed to provide apps for any of those options. So the only way to use Apple Classical is to use Wi-Fi to stream it from an iPad to Apple TV. But even then, all you can stream is stereo. Apple promotes high res Atmos, audio, but provides utterly no way to deliver such music to a high-quality audio system.
  • Please include instrument(s) in names of pieces

I really like how this app categorizes the recordings by pieces rather than “albums” like most other music apps. It makes it really easy to find what I’m looking for and also to compare different recordings of the same piece. My only complaint so far is that sometimes the names of the pieces aren’t descriptive enough. “Sonata no. 5” should be “clarinet sonata no. 5”, or “8 duos” should be “8 duos for cello and violin”, for example.
  • Should be able to filter by instrument when browsing recordings of a work.

Filtering by instrument is enabled when browsing albums of a performer or albums of a composer. Why not enable this for recordings of a work? This will be very helpful for keyboard music by JS Bach, for example, whose pieces been recorded on the piano, the harpsichord, the organ, and various transcriptions. It will also help with finding recordings of lieder in different voices.
  • Decent, but needs a queue

I was happy to see a solid pass at a genre which isn’t well served by most other apps & services. Audio quality is excellent, especially with AirPods or my studio headphones. My son loves being able to search by instrument as he learns to play the cello. The main drawback I noticed is not having a queue: I’m almost always listening to whole albums so if I see three things I want to listen to I shouldn’t have to spend time finding the second one an hour later. They also need to work on library matching. My iTunes Match collection has hundreds of well-tagged classical albums I ripped from my CD collection using iTunes, but perhaps a quarter of them show up in this app. They all have appropriate genre and composer tags.

  • Why Not Web / Mac Version?

I love the idea of the app but I need one music app that I can use both on my computer and my phone. I only listen to classical music so this is great except only my phone. I have high end headphones that plug into my computer. I suspect most classical music listeners don’t use airpods!! Is it too much to ask for one app on web / mac and phone??

Nice, purpose-built app for classical music. I love how the browse section is divided into categories for composers, periods, etc. Additionally, I appreciate the aggregated list of works for each composer, the editor’s picks, etc. The multitude of playlists for seemingly everything are also wonderful. My biggest complaint is the lack of a shuffle option for playlists. It would be great if that can be added in a future update.
