I got on this app in 2017 when I first began writing. In real life, when I first began rapping and spewing poetry, I felt I was lacking a community. I was in a poetry club, but we only met once a week. And it’s not like I could take them home with me. That’s when I discovered RB. A community of writers that I could have in my pocket 24/7. A community that could help me in growth and reaching maturity in my writing. And, for quite a while, that was true. I met, what I believed, to be some really great writers at the time. They gave me an assortment of tips and tricks to become better. The best. However, as the years passed, a lot of those originals left, and the app became a bit…. Lifeless? Stupidly, I took it upon myself to engage incorrectly with the app and troll relentlessly. I was subsequently banned. I found ways here and there to post things, but I couldn’t do anything on my two main accounts, which disconnected me from my community. Years later, after talking with Ron(the owner), I was unbanned on my mains. I still wrote throughout my time off of the app, and my pen soared greatly. I was leagues beyond where I once was. Thus, the overall complexity of my writing increased tenfold and it could be a bit more difficult to follow(but still understandable). I realized once I came back, however, that this place doesn’t support a whole lot of ingenuity, creativity, innovation, or difference in creativity. There’s a very strict formula that you must follow in order to be truly recognized here, and it’s extremely rigid/myopic. I would say rather…. Very relatable and digestible work is recognized over “different” works. Something that bothered me here most, however, is the lack of diversity. Won’t attribute this to the owner’s fault, but it seems very white here—with not a whole lot of black and brown artist. A black writer myself, found it a bit jarring and unnerving to post complex, fracturing, and emotional black art in this space, knowing that the likelihood of being understood was slim—even acknowledged by fellow participants or administrators. Not to mention that I think engagement on the app is very low. True engagement. There’s lots of incentive here to make Chart Topper of the week(in gaining high amounts of social currency and respect here), but not a lot of reason to sit down with writers and give them explanations as to why they “respect” their work. Most times, it’s just respect inflation, but rarely ever any criticisms. It blows inspiration away and the will to write. Someone could work so everlastingly hard on something, get a ton of respect, but not really get real conversation going about the work they liked. I think this app is great. But I do think that the lack of real, meaningful engagement and acknowledgment on this app hurts it more than not. Cheers.

Beware if you write any work while not signed in, and then turn on your WiFi and it tells you to sign in—you will lose any and all work you did while offline. I lost a whole song and multiple poems when they made this change. I lost the beginning of a new song just now because I was not signed in when I started it, then I turned my WiFi on. I usually don’t write poetry or lyrics in this app because of this risk; I just use it to get rhymes when I’m stuck.

If you leave for too long, all of your pieces get deleted. Or, at least, that’s what happened to me. I lost so much of what was important to me.
