  • Crashes on an M4 Max MacBook Pro—during cutscenes. Unacceptable.

I’m running this game on a top-spec MacBook Pro M4 Max with 128GB RAM and 8TB SSD, with a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU, and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows still crashed to desktop during a cutscene— specifically due to an EXC_BAD_ACCESS (KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS) memory violation. This is a sign of poor memory handling inside Ubisoft’s proprietary Scimitar engine. The fact that this occurred on Apple Silicon’s most powerful mobile machine—and during a predictable scripted event—suggests a serious lack of QA testing or proper optimization for macOS ARM architecture. No thermal throttling, no kernel panics, no hardware issues. Just a botched port. Ubisoft, if your flagship title can’t run stably on one of the most powerful consumer machines available, then how do you expect it to run on M1 Pro and M2 Pro or even Mac M3 Max chips? I’ve filed the crash report. But for now: Buyer beware. If you’re on any Mac, even a top tier one, expect instability. I’ve done diagnostics on my laptop, and everything is in order, and I’m not having issues with other games or programs. This game isn’t ready for prime time on macOS or Apple Silicon. It needs proper optimization. In other words, Ubisoft, your Scimitar Engine needs a lot more sharpening.
  • Terrible, is this from 1991?

Keeps crashing like this was a game from Windows XP. Gameplay when it does work is poor, more like a kids story with a plot that is not much fun.

Can’t seem to smash a simple door in the first mission. Is this a case of the Mac version being neglected? Am I just a rusty gamer?
  • Almost had it

The game content seems great. As of right now though the optimization is poor, the game frequently drops out and desperately needs an update to work out the issues. It’s a shame.

I’m not sure why I’ve seen such bad reviews. This game works great on my M3 Air. I have it sitting on a lap deck with fans and haven’t had any issues. The game even says it’s not compatible with my hardware when it starts. Not sure why as I didn’t even change any settings and have played hours upon hours of this game. I highly recommend.
  • Amazing Game Despite Technical Demands

After getting over the initial disappointment of the lackluster performance (M1 Max with 32GB of RAM feels like it should be enough), I’ve grown to love this game. It has a great storyline, characters, amazing music, a huge world, reasonable if sometimes finicky combat, and it’s probably the best game I have played in a few years, and definitely the best Assassin’s Creed in a decade.
  • DOES NOT WORK ON MAC. Money Back?

I have a brand spanking new Mac Studio M2 Max 64 GB RAM, and the game freezes … constantly. I’ve only played for about twenty minutes and am at a save point where the game loads and then all the buttons/mouse clicks just stop working. It’s like none of the inputs are being received. I’ve FORCE QUIT, restarted computer, and reloaded game to get the same results multiple times. At this point, there should be a full refund. Happy to keep playing if there’s a solution, but UBISOFT really messed up this release.
