I can’t sync runs to my Garmin or do basic things like make changes to my weekly mileage. It just auto goes back to the default.
  • Hal+ is a good option

I am trying Hal+ (fee based subscription) for a year. About a month in I am happy with base training program although it reminds me to be careful of cold weather, etc. Not a bad suggestion but it is late spring for me going into summer. Setting that aside, first thing to know is that the app will not integrate with an Apple Watch. It’s all manual entry for me. Second, as far as I can tell I cannot drag and drop workouts to shift things around. If I decide to move things around, I just make a mental note to manually enter as I complete a run. If you’re tied to a Garmin that may not be possible. Finally, I realized I needed to add in some other rest days due to family trips, etc. It appears that that might only be possible if you abandon your current plan then create a new plan. Also, if you have a cross training day scheduled it is just easier to mark it as completed with no other data entered. Before this, I had used a Coach Parry basic 5K plan (my preferred race). I like Coach Parry and their basic plan (and advice), like this one, it is tied to Training Peaks. For that 12-week period I could drag and drop workouts on my laptop or change dates on the app. I probably could have changed some of the interval workouts to tempo runs (which are used in the Hal+ app) but did not try to do that. I also had access to some of the calculators used on TP. Coach Parry felt a bit more robust but also limited in other ways. Again, I am only referring to the lite or limited plans on Coach Parry. There are other more expensive options. I have not tried any other plans or apps. As a so-so runner in my late 60s, I give Run With Hal 4 stars. It is a straight forward app with reasonable workouts. It loses a star for not integrating with the Apple Watch plus some inflexibility on scheduling workouts or access to useful calculators that you might get elsewhere. Update July 2025: first, I discovered that in the Hal+ program there are some limited options to edit the ‘do not schedule’ days along with a few other adjustments that are minimal; second, I noticed the plan pushes the pace as you progress-my example is as an older runner, I run around a 12:30 to 13:00/mi pace for Zone 2 but the app has pushed that up to an 11:30 pace based on previous workouts but I cannot do that without straddling the Z2 and Z3 for heart rate; finally, I ran into a foot/ankle issue towards the end of my offseason training plan but other than adding no training days there are no options to adjust the recommendation pace. I can work around these by just adjusting my workouts as suggested then manually entering the data later in the week. Again, I assume that this is not possible if you are choosing the direct connection to a Garmin device. These really are minor issues for the app but ones you would need to consider if you plan to use it.

I downloaded this app yesterday however once I create an account it brings me to a screen for run with Hal +…it gives me no option to exit out…requiring me to sign up for a free trial or pay a monthly fee…anyone else have this problem??!

Good app, but after doing the free trial, my app won’t let me access the free version. Need a bug fix. Otherwise good app making training and prep easy.
  • Good but not flexible

I wish there was an obvious way to enter runs that I did on days listed as “off” in the app, or to change up the running schedule after the plan is set. It didn’t seem to adapt when my typical run was twice as long as the plan.

REALLY wanted to give this 5 stars. This app worked great up until today (12 June). All I get is a black screen and it’s seriously annoying. To rub salt into the wound, I even paid for the Hal+. Trying to figure out how to contact customer service because I really want my $ back.

Overall a good app. I wish there was the ability to swap to training days, because sometimes weather or work prevents me from doing a longer run on a longer day but I can do one of the other shorter runs that day. I also wish the base training options were a bit better. If I selected a lower level plan the base training before the actual plan would start is so low compared to my standard mileage, but if I selected a higher level it jumped up significantly to where I’d be in the middle of the actual training program. I do like that it holds me accountable.

I’ve been emailing back and forth with customer service for more than 6 weeks to fix a problem regarding syncing with Garmin. All I get is something like “we’re aware of the problem and we’re working on it” and “make sure your app is up to date”. When is this going to be fixed?
