When I started playing, I noticed each lesson took a moment to load after tapping instead of just opening immediately, but decided to proceed regardless. I later found that other features of the app had issues as well. At a certain point, it suggests you make an account to save progress. The “sign in with Apple” option doesn’t let you select it, the Facebook option says it’s not supported or something like that—even though you’re meant to add friends through Facebook. I managed to actually make an account using my email, but after I completed this, I was closed out of the app. Additionally, there was an option to add a profile picture for the account and there was no way to choose a photo from camera roll, so the only means of adding a pfp was to take a picture with the camera which I thought was strange.
  • 200 ELO bump in 1 hour! fun, novel, and effective

After trying a lot of chess apps, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The creator's love for the game really shines through, and the minigames are a fun, unique, and very helpful way to improve. The free plan is generous, and less than an hour of minigames helped me bump my ELO by almost 200 immediately after stalling for ages. By far one of my best chess downloads ever.

I like the way the lessons are organized so I can focus more efficiently and improve my weaknesses quickly.
  • Very buggy and no support

This all seems to be very buggy. When I start new lessons the last lesson I just finished seems to be in memory because it displays, which is confusing, and then updates suddenly to the next lesson. I’d open a support case but the link provided goes to a generic Zendesk page saying “this page doesn’t exist” so it would seem this app is no longer supported. The chess trainings themselves seem to be OK. I would also say the “chess font” is really hard to see. I wish you could choose a font like chess.com or something you’re used to staring at all the time. They went with a modern looking font which is hard to determine pieces with on a quick manner.
  • THE BEST

Magnus Trainer is hands down one of the best chess learning apps out there. The methods are super creative and unique—nothing like the usual ways you’d try to study chess. It’s absolutely worth buying or subscribing to. If you stick with it, you’ll see yourself improving way faster than with any other approach you’ve tried before.
