Description

***Now with ability to upgrade at a discount*** Whether you’re a speech and language pathologist (SLP), an SLP college student, a parent of children with speech delays, or someone trying to improve their American English accent, you’re going to find this an invaluable application. A first of its kind in the field, Speech Tutor brings the latest in technology and animation to the world of speech. The animations inside Speech Tutor take the areas of the face that impede the view of tongue placement and positioning and make them transparent. Now one can literally see inside the mouth as the sounds are being made! Speech Tutor offers a “Side View” and a “Front View” of each sound production, both of which can be viewed at 3 different speeds (slow, medium, fast). The movies can also be paused any given point. With 132 animations in all, Speech Tutor is sure to offer a helpful view and speed for anyone in need. Speech Tutor does not stop there though. Non SLPs can begin the application by reading an easy to understand “Basics” tutorial which provides the reader with a solid foundation of the basic knowledge needed to know before attempting to improve any/all English consonants. Also provided is detailed text specific to each sound that further describes how each sound is technically made, tips provided by licensed speech and language pathologists, and milestones for when each sound should be acquired and mastered. Along with viewing the animations, one can also view a “Palate” diagram to further demonstrate where on the palate the tongue should be placed. Last but not least, users of the application can choose to record themselves as they practice their target sounds and then choose to play it before and after a correctly modeled production. Animations for the following sounds are provided: P, B, T, D, K, G, N, M, ING, F, V, S, Z, SH, CH, J, L, R (retroflex and bunched), TH (voiced and voiceless) and 4 new vowel animations - /i/, /u/, /a/ and /æ/

This is the first app I bought for showing students how to make the sound. I still use this app for students having difficulty forming sounds, especially back sounds.

I love to use this app to model what is happening in the mouth. The side view is especially helpful. I also like the visuals of where the tongue should be placed
  • Broken, waste of money

What happened to this app? I admit I haven’t used it in a few years, but it doesn’t even work anymore. It says it has to be connected to the internet (I don’t remember that being necessary), but the app can’t connect to the internet (my iPad is connected and working fine). Completely useless. Now there’s a pro version that’s $60?!?! So disappointing.

I feel duped. You get very very little features for the initial price. If you want the app to be even remotely usable, you need to upgrade to the pro version. Super sad I wasted my money on this app.
  • Love the visualization videos

I use this app with all of my artic, dysarthria and apraxia. The clear visuals really help my clients build awareness and improve their skills!

I really do love this app! Kids are receptive to it and enjoy it too. It is convenient for longer sessions or even for quick 5 minute sessions.
  • Upgrade was more like a downgrade

I paid this app for 3 years ago- worked beautifully for providing visual cueing during articulation therapy. Made the mistake of upgrading the app and it's a complete disaster. They added so much stuff and NOT in a cool, easy to use way.... would've been better if they just created separate apps. Graphics are cheap - and now, the one feature I loved about it ( the sagital view of inner oral cavity) is hidden under videos that don't completely fill up my iPad screen. If you're gonna overhaul a product this way, please test it out with USERS first. This upgrade feels like you hired a HS student to develop it cause it was cheap. Wish I could my money back!
  • Useful for school based therapy and beyond

I’ve found great value in the video aspect of this app. Some students have had “aha” moments when watching videos of how to produce the sound and when creating videos.

Update 10/28/2021: I’m increasing the rating to 3 stars as they gave me back access to Speech Tutor Pro. I also switched to a newer iPad model and it works better on this iPad. However, it is still a bit buggy and not as easy to work as the previous version. But if the bugginess gets fixed, I’ll change it to a 4star rating. Previous review: I don’t know why they made the changes they did because the App basically regressed to 2010 level quality of an iPad app. It works terribly and looks AWFUL. And not only that, but they reverted me back to Speech Tutor when I had upgraded to Speech Tutor Pro (using my own money) ages ago. So now I have access to word decks for only like 1 or 2 speech sounds, I tried reaching out to the company to see if they would fix the problem and they initially offered to help but now I haven’t heard from them for a couple of weeks. A couple of weeks is a long time when you rely on this app so much at work.

This app has been a lifesaver. Great go to when you need practice words for your students. It also has great videos with visuals for each targeted sound.
