I installed Opal after realizing my 8 hours of daily screen time was adding up to 122 DAYS a year on IG and TikTok. That hit me like a truck. I don’t want to spend my 20s watching other people live. I want to live my life. I struggle with impulsivity and a need for constant stimulation, so Instagram and TikTok are basically designed to be my kryptonite. The endless short form content eats up not just hours but entire days. I’d try to be productive, and suddenly I’m deep in a scroll hole. What makes Opal a game changer is its different modes to block apps for real. Before this, I’d just hit “remind me in 5 minutes” or “ignore for the day” every time screen time limits popped up. But Opal’s approach is def smarter. It blocks apps completely during focus sessions but also lets you take breaks where you can still control what’s accessible. It’s wild how something as simple as having to pause and think, “Do I actually need to check IG right now?” helps me stay mindful The best part is when I do try to open a blocked app, Opal gives me a gentle message instead of just a hard no, it actually makes me feel good about choosing not to scroll. I didn’t realize how deeply ingrained the habit was until this app helped me unlearn it. If you feel like you’re wasting your time on social media but still need your phone for work/school, this app is your new best friend.

I downloaded this based on a recommendation because I felt like I didn’t have enough self control around social media and games and it has been very helpful. I definitely feel better. The scheduled blocks are fantastic for avoiding distractions while working or picking up the phone in the middle of the night. However, the time-based blocks are garbage. I’m not sure if this is Opal’s fault or something that Apple is doing quietly running data but they will “hit limits” for apps that haven’t been opened all day. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up to Opal already blocking apps for the day. Those time based limits were pretty key for me trying to break mindless scrolling and it’s now becoming a bad habit to ignore the limits since they’re ignoring my parameters, making them pretty useless.

There is a bug that doesn’t allow me to modify the times or add a temporary block. The screen that pops up pops up highe and it doesn’t allow me to click save
  • Love the concept but app crashes A LOT

I really want to love this app but when trying to do anything custom, the app constantly crashes. If you pick anything other than their specific settings, plan on the app consistently crashing… I paid for the annual plan and it does it on both the free and paid plans. There is one app I use for my children’s school that I DO NOT want blocked that shows up under “social” and I cannot get it to not block without the app completely crashing. I want all other social apps blocked though. :( It even pops up with a warning saying that it happens a lot and to keep trying. Do you know when this will be fixed?

My screen time is down by 4-5 hours a day. This app has helped me deduct wasted time and chronic scrolling. Love it!
  • Crashes as you edit blocked apps for a break session almost constantly

Would be fantastic if it didn't crash every 5 seconds while I am trying to find my security camera app as I try to block most of my apps for a big break.
  • Definitely recommend!

  • Blocked my apps

If you want apps to be blocked it does the job but over time it gets really weird. It started blocking apps I didn’t tell it to restrict and when I tried to remove an app I did need to use it didnt remove it and wouldn’t. I got rid of the app because it took over my screen time and blocked my camera, photos, and my music. All of which I did not say to block. In addition to this, it didnt block them under the Opal app where I may be able to unblock it, it blocked it through screen time and I don’t have restrictions on screen time. It also went into safari and started blocking websites I didn’t ask it to block, including my website that allows me to do schoolwork.

It’s built very very nice. super simple to use and actually got me to reduce my screen time. Recommend it for everyone. I dont ever write reviews for apps but Opal is special. Tips to Maximise your usage: you should schedule a recurring session everyday and block the most distracting apps. Make sure you select the timeout setting - this way, everytime you try to override the block, Opal makes you wait longer periods. For me atleast, the distracting apps were Instagram and gmail and Snapchat. Now that I use timeout, I realised everytime I open the apps during a block out of a habit, I wait for 20-30s due to Opal and change my mind. And the app never gets opened. Too good
