Description

Use Microsoft Authenticator for easy, secure sign-ins for all your online accounts using multi-factor authentication, passwordless, or password autofill. You also have additional account management options for your Microsoft personal, work or school accounts. Getting started with multi-factor authentication Multi factor authentication (MFA)provides a second layer of security. When enabled, during login after entering your password, you’ll be asked for an additional way to prove it’s really you. Either approve the notification sent to the Microsoft Authenticator, or enter the one-time password (OTP) generated by the app. The OTP codes have a 30 second timer counting down. This timer is so you never have to use the same time-based one-time password (TOTP) twice and you don’t have to remember the number. The OTP doesn’t require you to be connected to a network, and it won’t drain your battery. You can add multiple accounts to your app, including non-Microsoft accounts like Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox, Google, LinkedIn, GitHub, and more. Getting started with passwordless Use your phone, not your password, to log into your Microsoft account. Just enter your username, then approve the notification sent to your phone. Your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN will provide a second layer of security in this two-step verification process. After you’ve signed in with two factor authentication (2FA), you’ll have access to all your Microsoft products and services, such as Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more. Getting started with autofill Microsoft Authenticator app can also autofill passwords for you. Sign-in on the Passwords tab inside the Authenticator app with your personal Microsoft account to start syncing passwords, including the passwords saved in Microsoft Edge. Make Microsoft Authenticator the default autofill provider and start autofilling passwords on apps and sites you visit on your mobile. Your passwords are protected with multi-factor authentication in the app. You will need to prove yourself with your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN to access and autofill passwords on your mobile. You can also import passwords from Google Chrome and other password managers. Microsoft personal, work or school accounts Sometimes your work or school might ask you to install the Microsoft Authenticator when accessing certain organization resources. You will need to register your device to your organization through the app and add your work or school account. Microsoft Authenticator supports cert-based authentication by issuing a certificate on your device. This will let your organization know that the sign-in request is coming from a trusted device and help you seamlessly and securely access additional Microsoft apps and services without needing to log into each.

  • New iPhone nightmare

I have no beef with the Authenticator app itself, but I just swapped an iPhone 15 for a 17 and it didn’t copy all my Authenticator accts. It’s unbelievably convoluted trying to get them back. I ended up having to change my Microsoft password, which will cause further grief. My Google authenticator accts transferred with no drama.

Microsoft, come on you can do better!!! Why of why is there no way to backup and restore or sync Authenticator apps between iOS and Android versions of the app?!?! I currently have over 40 Microsoft and other 3rd party MFA accounts set up in my Microsoft Authenticator apps between iOS in my personal iPhone. I got a new work Android and never dreamed that there would be no way to transfer accounts between two phones. The Microsoft work and personal accounts, I can manually add and log back into, though a bit of a pain. Several other time based one-time-code 3rd party accounts, unless I happened to save/backup the initial MFA QR code or manual enrollment code into (only fluid for 2-3 accounts), there is no way to add those to my second phone!!! I’m generally a Microsoft supporter (I even used Microsoft Authenticator as the MFA app for several of my Google accounts!), but I am seriously considering moving all of my non-Microsoft accounts to the Google Authenticator apps, as it has a relatively easy way to sync/transfer between phones (including cross-platform iOS/Android), exactly what MS should have! You can do better Microsoft!

It’s important to remember when you download this app that if you SWITCH PHONES, you will need to re-sign in on your Authenticator app before you try and sign into anywhere else. ALSO if you have an account attached to an Organization, you may need to call your organizations IT department so they can reset and recalibrate your Authenticator to avoid account fraud.

my school requires me to use this to login to every single little thing and it is so frustrating and annoying. My information doesn't feel "more secure" it just makes it harder for me, THE PERSON THAT THIS ACCOUNT BELONGS TO, to access it. A QR code NEVER popped up mind you. When I try to add an account to the app it tries to make me go to the authenticator app to access the account IM ALREADY IN THE APP WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! and let's say i have the account now.... it does not work lile it's supposed to. No verification codes pop up, no nothing. It just says the account information and it pisses me off. Top ten ways to make logging into a school account the most agonizingly annoying way possible. To the person who made this stupid app, count your days.
  • Terrible sign in options

Almost all of the time you try to use the app and sign into your system from inside the app, it asks to send a code. This obviously can’t work because you don’t have access to your sign in because you’re trying to sign in, and it’s this backwards loop requiring you to input a code to a system you can’t get access to through the app. It’s mind numbing.

The authenticator simply doesn’t work. I have tried to certify my account several times but it never works or tells me that it is not currently working. I had have my MSN account for more than 20 years and now I cannot even access the account settings.
  • How is this a highly rated app?

This is the simplest possible application while still providing value to the marketplace. Yes I’m currently frustrated by a bug where I can’t get codes to show but there are circular flows where within the Authenticator app, I am being asked to show a code from that same application in a screen that I can’t leave without abandoning the flow. I cannot solve my problem with that UX. Seriously, this is an app that only exists in my life because I have to use it. If you have this to my small dev team we would have a solution within 3 months. Didn’t say days, I’m in the industry but this is not as complicated as it has been made to be.
