  • Bug: Uploading a photo needs camera permissions. Opinion: Hard to justify over ChatGPT.

    To upload a photo, you need to grant the app camera permission. When you tap the image icon, it tries to open the camera UI, which is then used to select a photo from your library. Unfortunately, the app doesn’t support custom instructions, which is a bit disappointing. You can work around this by subscribing to Gemini Advanced and creating a custom gem, but custom instructions really should be a free feature. The search function doesn’t seem as robust as ChatGPT Search when it comes to linking sources, and it doesn’t display search results either, which is a drawback. Gemini Live isn’t nearly as expressive as ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. While it has a cleaner-sounding name, the actual voice doesn’t feel as natural or human-like. To use the extensions, you need to have Gemini Apps Activity enabled. After reading the privacy policy, it’s a bit unsettling—having it turned on means your chats could be reviewed, and they make it sound like every single one might be. Given it also has access to your Google Drive and Notes, that’s a bit spooky! Overall, it’s nice to have an alternative option, but I’m finding it hard to justify. That said, the UI does look pretty clean, so I’ll give it that. P.S. I’m also a bit frustrated with Google’s AI principles. It feels like they prioritize who they think should use the AI “correctly,” rather than supporting everyone equally. Deciding what’s “fair bias” and what’s not feels overly controlling to me.
