  • Very disappointing

I started using this app several years ago and it was very well organized with a diverse offering of activities you could do to learn a language. With every update the options were reduced to the point that you can only do what it wants you to do. It’s become really boring and incredibly annoying. The bugs are also make it even more infuriating. They would do themselves a huge favor to revert back to the app from several years ago.

  • The right way to learn

Before getting Duolingo, I was slightly skeptical of how well it would work. I didn’t expect how useful it was. Once I got it, I was shocked at how effective it was to learning languages. Before, I thought learning more than 3 languages was impossible. Now, I’m easily learning five. The only downside is the switch from hearts to energy, it forces you to learn slower, unlike hearts, which only depleted if you got questions wrong. But, overall, this is the best way to learn and improve a language.
  • Nonstop ads

The ads are nonstop! I understand needing some ads for a free app, but the vast majority are from Duolingo trying to get you to upgrade to a paid subscription! It’s super annoying and there is no option to opt out of the constant upgrade requests. Otherwise the lessons are fun but the ads really limit how much time I want to spend on the app.
  • I like it but…

It’s so… darn… PUSHY! Needs a “casual” learning mode, that doesn’t harass you after each lesson about committing and upgrading and doing more. If I wanted commitment I’d have married my ex. Please make a new mode: “Hey, casual learner here, I’m not interested in having weekly streaks or notifications. I don’t want any notifications thanks.” Already quoted the app once because of it. Came back 2 years later, quickly remembered why I quit. Also needs a SKIP button. Some of the phrases are long and hard, with 10+ words. After 10 errors on a long phrase, just allow us to skip for crying out loud. I find myself having to do a screenshot, and then going in between the screenshot and the application just to get by. That frustration is what caused me to quit last 2 times.

It was fun at first but then most apps of mine when i downloaded it stopped working and my wifi was really horrible and slow. I was learning Vietnamese and told my Vietnamese friend i was learning and i told them what i learned , they then told me the pronunciation was completely wrong. I told them hi, which I said “Chào” and she said I said porridge instead of hi and hi is “xin chào.” There are definitely better apps if you want to learn Vietnamese.
