This has been one of the better apps for this. However with new practices and many emergency services going encrypted ( to not impede ICE operations) many emergency streams are now offline. If you are trying to find out why sirens are swarming your neighborhood. You’re out of luck now. At least in my community.

  • Ads unbelievably obnoxious and unethical

Dev ignores the horrible ad experience reports. Great app and I have no problem with ads to help support the app. However, the system being used by dev is horrible, serving ads that cannot be dismissed except by going to download page. In addition, many of the ads are clearly designed to take advantage of low income and folks that are desperate for money .

The Scanner Radio program is stable and includes access to many feeds including the Broadcastify feeds. The interface is fairly well implemented although lacking in some features which would enhance the user experience. It provides much functionality. This program allows users to create notifications when any feed exceeds a user user-selected number of listeners. This allows notification about typically low volume feeds when reach an unusually high number of listeners. This program also supports a notification for anytime any of the available feeds exceeds a user chosen threshold (the default number is 2000 listeners although I found that 2100 to 2400 to be my preference). This feature is essentially a universal major incident notification. The application supports a user favorites list. This is a desirable and useful feature. The favorites list however is always sorted (and can only be sorted) alphabetically; an option to sort the favorites list by other criteria is conspicuously absent feature. Specifically an option to also sort the favorites list by number of listeners is missing. On a positive note; the list of user created notifications functions independently of the user favorites list. This means one can configure notifications for feeds which you do not wish to include in your favorites list. Another desirable feature is that feeds which are transmitted in stereo provide a balance-control which allows attenuation of a right or left channel which is comparatively too loud to the other channel. For example if fire/rescue is on the left channel and law enforcement is on the right channel; being able reduce the gain on the channel you are less interested in without muting it entirely is a great feature. The lack of an equalizer (EQ) control on feeds is a conspicuously missing feature. Some feeds have chronic background noises or a whine which make extended listening to that feed unpleasant; For these feeds the inability to attenuate the unpleasant noise with something like a parametric EQ (which includes controls for: center frequency, bandwidth, and cut/boost) is simply problematic. I grant that many people do not yet know how to use parametric EQ; however such a feature makes learning how to use parametric EQ possible. Adding more features to any program increases complexity and can lead to the program being less stable and robust. As such I am disinclined to lower my overall rating of the program because of what in my opinion are missing features and functionality. A robust and stable program is preferable to a quirky and-or frequently crashing program. So despite my personal critiques regarding missing features; this still earns 5 stars from me. If other similar programs provided some of the functionality I wish was present then I would give more weight to the absent features. Until other similar programs include these additional features; this application is among the best currently available.

It would be five stars if it wasn’t for that stupid 10 minute long Royal Kingdom ad.
