Coming from an avid user who has recorded thousands of miles on the app since 2018, I can tell you that AllTrails’ value has taken a steady nosedive over the past few years. This is not coming from a place of nostalgia, as I am very open to updated looks, UI, and new features. However, the product still has to retain its functionality and continue to provide a VFM experience - AllTrails has failed miserably at that. I held off on writing this review when USGS maps were eliminated; when the Map view of activities and completed trails disappeared from the iOS app; when the price of the subscription rose from $21 for 3 years to $36 annually; and when the app became so overloaded with laggy features that it completely lost the ability to display my lists without crashing (and I have the newest update, on the newest iPhone and newest iOS, and I have deleted and reinstalled the app multiple times). The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I opened the app today and was greeted by the wonderful message that there is now an even higher level of subscription for ~$78/year, called “Peak,” and the “Plus” level that I have been paying for will now be stripped of all the features I have found useful (heatmap, weather conditions, building my own maps). This is a travesty and you’d have to be out of your mind to quintuple the price of subscription and then strip that membership of almost all its features shortly after. While AllTrails seems to have invested a lot in upping its visual UI and turning the app into an interactive social space, they have failed to maintain basic functionality and the product’s VFM. I understand that they intend to capitalize on hiking’s increased popularity and the spread of their app’s popularity through TikTok and such, but I can’t help but view these recent moves as an egregious money-grab. After 7+ years of loyalty, I will be switching to more a functional alternative with a higher VFM - and I encourage anyone looking for their first premium/paid outdoors application to do the same.
  • Ads on AllTrails?

If you want to add ads that might boost revenue on the front end instead of having to keep asking about the subscriptions every time, one ad per hike would not be bad for me as an avid use of AllTrails.
  • Useless on iPad

This app is very nice on iPhone but it’s useless on iPad because it’s still the same size as the phone app so you can’t see a thing. I guess I’ll still use the web version.

Need more unmarked trail mapping. Also need to be able to find trails that are mostly dirt or grass aka surfaces that are soft on joints.
  • Sad

AllTrails used to be a clear cut hiking app that provided good results. Recently, it's been running as basically an ad farm for their newest subscription. They throw it in your face 24/7. I've had the premium membership before, it's not worth it. It just gives you access to what the whole purpose of the app is. It's sad they have to take a good thing that could be helpful and turn it into a flashy money grab with no improvement of results.
  • Paid for downloads & they won't download

Please fix the downloads. I prepped for a hiking trip, paid for the service to get access to downloads, download them and now it's in a bugged state where the app can't decide if the trails are downloaded or loading. Really disappointed because that was the only reason I paid for this.

How do I remove the dots of where other people have been. I don’t care where others have been I bought the app to see where the trails go.

Used this app many times when I go hiking! I have really enjoyed both online and offline features. I still use the free version (for now) but it’s been great!

I love how comprehensive and yet simple AllTrails is. It has a local feel which is nice when you’re looking to explore areas where you live.
