It complains about orientation but if you twirl your display certain ways it can work. What a pain

When I am screen mirroring my phone onto my Apple TV, the app crashes 90% of the time when I try to open the daily mini. I bet it’s something to do with the format of the puzzle. It would swap between showing all clues on the left and puzzle on the right to being an exact copy of my screen.

I have been playing the games for months and liked doing the daily puzzles. But now the removed access to more than half of the puzzles. Bait and switch just to push subscriptions.

Now they require a subscription for the mini crossword. I can understand for the main crossword but come on. You just can’t get anything for free anymore, not even a simple mini game…

Say Yes to Spelling Bee Archive, NYT! Do it! Say Yes! Yes! Yes! Archive for Spelling Bee. Brilliant, yes?
  • Please allow Pips to be in landscape mode for iPad

The most recent update requires Pips to be in portrait mode, which on an iPad attached to a keyboard is a giant nuisance. (Otherwise, I love the app.)
  • Will Shortz is the Devil’s Spawn

I solve about 321 of these everyday. Okay maybe 1 per day, but on Friday or Saturday they feel more like 20 or 137 puzzles. I mean who knows Will Shortz’s niece’s, boy friend’s, best friend’s, favorite lipstick to see on Salma Hayak? (Clue 31D 07/07/17) So then why do I keep doing them if they frustrate me? Because I’m a compulsive, anal games doer. (Clue 23A, 09/23/19) Maybe they are fun too. Who knows? (10/11/24) If you like crosswords forget the Des Moines Register. They use USA Today’s puzzle. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you want to get totally flummoxed, occasionally weep and enjoy cursing, the Register isn’t going to cut it. No, get the real deal.

I stumbled across this app well after the Wordle craze had come and gone during the lockdown. My sister was gifting a sub to my father for his birthday, and I joined so we could compete as a team. I’ve found the yearly cost worth it. It gives me puzzles to try every day, and the app is often updated to improve it. Many complain about the cost, but I have found it worth what they are charging.
