  • Ancient “For You” section articles

9/27/2023 the back arrow button to Today page seems to work today. 9/26/2023 v10.29 after reading an article and then tap the back arrow button and the Today page is blank. Grr…. Updated to version 10.30 as it states “This version has general bug fixes and improvements.” Well, the same thing happens! Generally, after an update, I clear cache within the app. That didn’t help today. So, they don’t test, or test the entire app to learn that their “fixes” breaks the user interface. iPadOS 16.7. Also, dislike the “Play” tab. I purchased a subscription for news NOT games. Another issue is the illogical list of sections. If there is a specific article one wants to read, one has to guess which section it might be in, but one has to look through the entire list. Why not alphabetical? 3/18/2023 v10.5.0 The “For You” section has always been a waste. Once NYT’s stupid intelligence feeds an article, they’re there for eons. Get rid of it and go back to customers’ selected topics. The sections list is disorganized that it is cumbersome to find the section you want. Don’t get me started on their non-intelligent search, in which the exact article title and or author results in everything but the search terms. Customers pay a lot for subscriptions. The least NYT could do is use the money to pay human beings! 10/19/2022 v9.87.0 Does NOT adhere user preferences to NEVER Autoplay videos still NO dark mode. I even deleted the app, downloaded and installed latest version to no avail. 10/8/2022 v.9.86 NO dark mode as stated in the developer’s update notes. Fooled again. More lies. More discrimination. The Display Settings only state where to now change text size with a preview of some unknown text size. NOTHING else. Should be negative stars, especially the amount paid for the subscription and enduring plethora of ads. Recently, there are numerous pop-up ads for their various games despite all notifications “off.” Luckily the Washington Post app and news reports are splendidly Devine. 9/9/2022 v9.84.0 app description states “Dark mode his here” but No it is NOT on iPhone 13 w/iOS 15.6.1. I rebooted the phone, logged out and then logged in and it’s still glaring bright white. There is NO option in the Display Settings just the text size. A few users wrote having dark mode with some having crashing every 30 seconds, so it must be discrimination as to who is privileged enough even though I’ve been an All Acess Subscriber since 2006. However, dark mode exists on iPadOS. 6/25/2022 the auto playing off videos when user preference is set to NEVER Autoplay Videos is maddening. Loose another star and deleting app. 6/24/2022 latest version 9.78.1 dismisses my user preference “Never Autoplay Videos” that I set years ago. Videos also play even when “Automatic Refresh” is “Off”. In addition to many other users’ comments there is still NO dark mode. The NYT update notes states cryptic “bug fixes and improvements” of which there are none but rather deterioration and failures. The changes over the years such as no longer allowing setting subject section priorities and the UNuseful “For You” tab section implies that the NYT does NOT care about users — their customers, whose high subscriptions rates pay their salaries. Stars are only for the journalists.
  • The App Just Gets Worse

Love the Times. Hate the app. Locks up. Closes without warning. Constantly losing my game stats. Totally unstable.
  • Got back to old app

I’ve been a WSJ reader for a decade and I’m big fan. However, I'm not a fan of the new app format where I can’t swipe left and right between articles in a section. The flow was better with the previous version of the app.

I’ve use this app for years and years with no issues and in the last couple months I’ve experienced multiple crashes and bugs with the various doodads that they try to include in their interactive articles. i’m using iPhone 14 Pro
  • Freezes can’t do anything

Last update causes it to freeze and not be able to do anything. This is a paid subscription app…. What am I paying for? Update a month later: still freezes 50% of the time.

The app has always had an issue where it would hang and become unresponsive. Now it’s crashing all the time! I can’t even finish reading one article without it crashing

  • Ads Automatically Open Now when scrolling

Ads pop open up now and redirect me when scrolling. Get rid of this. I’m fine being able to scroll past any number of ads but having them randomly and automatically open is too much.
  • Good app, but 2 issues.

    1. Currently, using this app, it is not possible to view your sports section (The Athletic) on a mobile device without having an active internet connection. I hope this changes ASAP. YeahI know the Sthletic has its own app and maybe it's possible with that, but as it's now also the sports section of the Times, hoping for the change within the Times app. 2. Speaking of using the app offline, currently you need to click on each section individually while online to download the data and make it available offline. Would be great if there were a way to just download the whole paper at once for offline viewing, or perhaps several prespecified sections. I'll add that the font of the Athletic is significantly lighter and "fancier" than the nytimes font. For those of us who are over 40 (which I suspect is much or most of your reader base) that means it's harder to read. Hoping the Athletic will adopt the Times font. Thanks a lot for reading, I hope these ideas actually do reach someone at the Times and they have a chance of actually happening. (:
  • Please stop with the pop up video ads

The pop up video ads that play without warning are very distracting and frustrating. It feels unprofessional and what I would expect from an unpaid and unreliable app.
