    This is the first app review I have ever written. I am taking the time to work through some of my deep frustration with the most recent update that integrates what was the Times Audio app with the standard Times app. I have been a frequent and enthusiastic user of both of these and understand the reason why NYT might want them integrated but my experience has been TERRIBLE. The audio portion crashes and stalls constantly and makes it very difficult to organize my listening experience. The old Audio app was seamless and this is just driving me crazy. I am about to search for alternate ways to listen to NYT podcasts before I give up on them altogether b/c I just don’t have the patience for this nonsense. Seeing as people often listen to NYT podcasts on the go (in cars, on subways, etc.) I imagine I’m not the only frustrated user. Get it right folks!!

  • The most user-hostile app on my phone

    I hate this app so much. I would never use it except that it forces me off the webpage when I try to read a story there. Why? Because when I click into the app, it sends me to a user page on the Internet and then it asks me to click on a button to go into the app. Then when I go into the app, this story I was originally trying to read doesn’t load. In fact, it may have to go through anywhere between two and five redirects. Then I have to go back to the home page and search through all the stories until I find the one I was originally reading. And that story is usually buried somewhere. Does that make sense to you? The Times tries to lure me in with stories that might interest me in my email, When I click on one of those stories, I have to go through this useless waste of time I previously described to try to find the story on the app. I’m sure that someone from the Times will probably ask me to contact you and help me troubleshoot what is going on here. Perhaps I will avail myself of that option. I would prefer, however, that you address this with your tech team upfront. I am sure I am not the only iPhone user who is also a Times subscriber with this problem. I hate it so much I would consider surrendering my decades-long subscription.

  • Ads are a scrolling minefield

    The app is easy to use and very capable but the numerous large ads make scrolling and reading difficult. The ads load while reading displacing the text so that you are frequently searching for your place again. Also they occupy much of the iPhone screen so a careless scroll launches an ad in the browser requiring navigation back to the app to continue reading. Safari in reader mode was a more pleasant experience.

  • Blocks VPN Use

    This app won’t work while on VPN. It’s been 3 months since I reported the error. Would be 5 stars if I could use the app at all.

    What ever happened to all the news that is fit to print? Am I wrong in that I feel that the NYT is reducing the number of articles written, I been a reader for many decades and the paper doesn’t seem as comprehensive. Less journalists?
