The app is well designed. The interaction patterns are amazing and above all the content, reporting, opinions are trustworthy, truthful and informative.

I so appreciate the times. Nothing is perfect, but I trust the NYT to provide realistic information. That’s really important right now

Quite simply the very best in the US. Thank you so much for your diligent and thorough reporting. It’s absolutely vital today.

I don’t always agree with their op-eds but the factual, on the ground reporting is something that I know they vet thoroughly. I trust the NYT more than any other news outlets in the US. PS - Subscribe to support them. (I have no financial benefit from saying that.)

  • Please please please remove ads for subscribers in Audio

I had previously left 1 star reviews for the Audi aspect due to battery draining issues, as well as memory issues. They have been improved. However, it remains frustrating, as a subscriber, that the podcasts and other audio articles accessed through the apps contain ads. It should be trivial to remove them for subscribers for a premium experience. That it does not is either hostility to subscribers, or sheer laziness. It would be one thing to keep the ads from non-NYT sources, but it is frustrating to hear a pitch to subscribe for 30 seconds at the start of each podcast when I am already a subscriber!

Love the content, don’t care for the app. I use exclusively for audio. It freezes and kicks me out of podcasts. It also freaks out if I take a photo why using. Wha?!
  • Better, but not good

The app has grown, like a spastic child becoming a teenager. Maybe better, but it’s not very good at everything. The app used to seize up and shift the page mid-article. You would not only lose your spot, but your spot might be off the screen. And it would do it whenever you’d scroll. It would also require you to go through an intricate set of menus to get anything other than the preferred few stories, and when you hit the back button, take you back to the beginning instead of up a level. Now, they have fixed the technical issues. But, it still only lets you see today’s news and not what was in the paper a day or two ago, like the website let us do. I sometimes miss the news for a day and want to get the context and stories I’ve missed. The app defaults you to a spastic set of breaking news articles, even though they’re not so deep and some aren’t even fully written articles. For some reason, they make it difficult to systematically go through the entire paper. It’s worse than paper or the web, in that I can’t easily scan and skip articles. And that makes it hard to go through all of the paper. On the ads and tracking, it’s currently quite decent. There are no clickbait ads or those hard to distinguish from real stories. Not sure if it’s my ad blocker or VPN, but at least the video ads that take up the whole screen are gone. I would worry about accidentally clicking on them when trying to scroll past and accidentally consenting to share all my information. The app does ask me if I want to reject cookies from hundreds of vendors. And I can opt out of sale of my personal information (WSJ wouldn’t allow this for US customers last I checked). They’ve also made it easier to get Wirecutter and the Athletic in this app. Not sure I love their infatuation with audio and video, making them whole tabs, but whatever. It would be nice to get transcripts of those audio and video stories, though, and similarly to be able to read aloud regular stories while driving. Overall, it’s gotten much better, but I’m not sure it’s quite at 100% of the functionality I get from the paper or website.

Weekend Edition. Wish it was more contained vs being so voluminous
