This service has become a safety concern. Random disconnections from every server no matter the protocol with no indication (also, kill switch has now failed multiple times for the first time ever), pages crashing continuously, and unbelievably long load times when I am actually able to maintain a connection. Close your for phone for 30 seconds? Disconnects. On a server within your own city with the lowest server load? Disconnects (again no matter the protocol). UI is terrible now, US servers are all the way at the bottom of the list, and they removed the ability to immediately make profiles. If I’m browsing for over 10 min, I’m always checking to see if I’m suddenly reconnecting to the server, when I’ve never had this issue in the past. I’ve gladly paid $96 a year for the values Proton carries regarding data privacy, but this has become far too frustrating to keep paying for. It’s a shame, and I never leave reviews, but beware.

  • Manipulative!

To me there is nothing worse than the old 'bait & switch': give you a free app to constantly try to upsell you! The second worst is 'manipulation'. Proton is a manipulative app. In my case I simply needed to access US-based websites like my car insurance while in Asia. The free Proton version will automatically route you through Singapore or Netherlands or somewhere else abstract. It won't route you through the USA unless you pay to upgrade. Such BS just to get your insurance policy!

My experience with Proton VPN was at one time great and now becoming tedious.   Unfortunately as time has gone on, issues have become overwhelming.   Proton servers are being identified and blocked more and more.  It is a waste of time turning a VPN on/off to view some websites or portions of websites.  Proton gives work-arounds like turn off NetShield, uninstall/reinstall, change protocols, change servers, …...  All this is ridiculous, I just want it to work.  I do not have time to keep fiddling with my VPN.   Sure, if you look hard enough you may find a server/protocol combination that works for a while but I want the fastest server- not one half a world away.   Sorry.  The goal and premise of Proton is privacy and I hand it to them for that, but enough is enough. Time to change even though I have more than a years left on my subscription.
  • Would have kept but….

I would have kept this app but it literally forced a VPN connection that could not be turned off in the phone settings. If you tried, it would snap back to active. What’s wrong with that, right? Well, I can tell you. If it was on, I could no longer access any devices being ran on Alexa, including Amazon plugs. i also could no longer access any of my Hue lights, and any Hue light automation was rendered ineffective. As soon as I uninstalled this app, all access came back and my automation routines worked again. I understand why it did that. I just wonder why the developers of the app didn’t QA connectivity issues with any other apps that will be present in-today’s society. Speed slowed slightly but that was expected. Maybe if they work on these serious issues, I’ll try them again. But until then, I’ll just use a separate laptop that’s a virtual desktop.

For awhile it seemed like my connection was being dropped once or twice a week. Things are twice as good now. According to the math... carry the 1... I'm only being dropped about once a week now. :-/
